Fears About Parenthood as a Sex Worker

I very much want to be a parent. As someone who sells sex, and who has both an online presence as a sex worker activist and an online presence under a sex worker persona, I’m scared about how the stigma I face will impact parenthood. I thought I’d share my thoughts here.

  1. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this. I am a parent and a sex worker and I have been engaged in some form of sex work for the majority of my (now 17 year old) child’s life and I totally understand your fears. I have communicated openly (and of courseaage appropriately) with my child about my work from around 9 years old, and have always spoken openly about sex workers rights in our household. Fortunately I was able to keep my public persona quite incognito until my child was older, and avoided showing my face online until they had left school which very much mitigated the external judgement issue. I don’t have any great words of wisdom, other than to tell you that from my experience, children are incredibly intelligent and adaptable beyond most people’s recognition. While we never want our children to be mistreated due to our own stagmatised conditions, I have no doubt that you’ll equip them so well to deal with whatever comes their way.
