Here is a PDF copy of “Contemporary Companion”. Physical copies were Kickstarter exclusive and there is no e-book for sale, but subscribers here get to read the digital copy!
Whilst this book heavily references “Contemporary Prostitution: Study of a Social Question”, originally published in 1884, which I recently translated and published, it is not necessary to have read the book to read this. Any relevant segments are quoted here in full. This is a 93-page discussion of Léo Taxil’s positions on prostitution, debunking some of the false claims he made and delving into the real reasons people sold sex and what their experiences were like. I also give context as to the law around prostitution in 1800s France.
There are references to many books within, as sources debunking some of the claims Taxil made due to his bigoted assumptions, most of which are in English if you’re interested in reading about European sex worker history!
